Custom Applications are a necessary evil for all businesses. Off-the-shelf packaged applications typically do not mimic the organization's business processes perfectly. Changing the way the organization functions best simply to align with the processes built into a packaged application is not always the answer. Customization for processes and management data reporting should be a last resort - after a solid business process analysis.

• When systems implementations, upgrades or integrations are planned; or there is a newly defined business requirement, an examination of the underlying business processes should take place. It's a search for productivity improvements with the intended system change kept in perspective.

• Armed with Process, Application and Data maps, a Project Charter and Project Management Plan can be developed for the design, testing and implementation of the custom application. 

• Contractual arrangements, if present, can be established, monitored and controlled as the project progresses.
